Kate O' Hearn Visit
09 October 2013 |
| Kate O'Hearn, the author of the Pegasus stories, came to visit the children to promote her new book: Valkyrie. She brought the Dark Searcher with her, who threatened to eat all the teachers. The children voted that he eat Mr Wibroe, but Mr Wibroe was sufficiently cunning to avoid this terrifying fate! Kate explained to the children the entire process of getting a book published and fired up the children's imagination to continue developing their own story ideas. Thank you, Kate, for visiting us. |

Maypole Dancing on the Village Green
03 May 2013 |
| On a gloriously warm, sunny Spring afternoon girls from Years 5 and 6 took to the village green to crown the May Queen (Katie). Attendants were Charley, Nicole and Maia. They then performed traditional Maypole dances including the Spider's Web, Double Plait, Pembury Separate, Rufus Stomp and Barber's Pole. This is a tradition at Pembury School to greet the Spring. Children from Key Stage 2 and many parents came to watch and enjoy the sunshine, and we finished the afternoon by singing our Spring song, which brings joy to all our hearts. Special thanks go to Miss Chambers, Miss Knight and Mrs Plane for rehearsing the children to perform quite complicated dances so well. Thanks girls, for a wonderful afternoon. |

Islam Educational Workshops
18 April 2013 |
| We enjoyed a visit by Claire Ali from Islam Educational Workshops, who came to talk to the children about Islam and the Koran. Claire presented an assembly to each Key Stage explaining how the Koran came to be written and about the Arabic language. The children learnt a little bit of Arabic in the process. She then did some workshops with Years 4 and 5 to explore the Islamic tradition in more depth. Year 4 is studying Islam in RE so it was really useful to have a representative of that faith to come and talk about it and bring artefacts to life. We have quite a few Moslem children in the school and we enjoyed learning more about their religion, which is one of the largest in the world. |

The children thoroughly enjoyed watching each other's performances, working together and interpreting different styles and rhythms. Thank you to parents for all the help with costumes. You will be able to see a video of your children's dances early next term. |

Comic Relief
15 March 2013 |
Comic Relief returned to Pembury Primary School with a bang! The children all wore red to school and the effect was quite dramatic when they were gathered in the hall for assembly. Not quite as dramatic as the 'Gangnam Style Flash Mob' performed by the staff supported by Mr Pook on Lollipop air guitar!!
At break and lunchtime the children in Years 4 and 5 worked hard manning stalls. There was a huge variety including cake stalls (very yummy!!), treasure hunt, design your own red nose and guess the smarties in the jar to name but a few activities.
The children all worked very hard and we were delighted to find out that they had raised £645.38.
Well done to all involved and thank you to Mrs Bowyer for helping to organise this. |

Author Visit
23 January 2013 |
| The children's author, Ian MacDonald, visited us over 3 days. Ian shared his experiences as a writer and read the children some of his stories, which we greatly enjoyed. Each class was lucky enough to have a masterclass workshop in which Ian was able to guide the children in formulating their ideas, constructing pictures in writing and developing characters. The children produced some amazing writing as a result, which we celebrated in assembly. The visit was a great opportunity to immerse ourselves in the literary world and thanks to Mrs Scott for organising the whole thing so brilliantly. |

Olympic Sculpture Unveiling Ceremony
21 November 2012 |
| After months of careful design creativity, Guy Portelli and the children from Larch class were finally ready to unveil Jason Best's Olympic logo sculpture. It is based on Jason's drawing taking the theme of the Olympic flame. All the children in Jason's class have contributed to the final piece, which looks stunning on our playground. We were especially lucky to have the honour of being visited by Luke Patience, London 2012 silver medal winner in the 470 class men's sailing at Weymouth. Luke talked to the children about his own Olympic journey and also enjoyed watching some video of the Pembury Sailing Club in action. Children from Larch class also showed their video documentary of the making of the sculpture. We now have something that will help us to remember the wonderful summer of 2012 for years to come. A great achievement for Pembury School. |

Green Travel Roadshow
25 October 2012 |
| Children in Reception to Year 4 were visited by the Green Travel Roadshow to help promote walking to school as one way of staying healthy and being active. Most of our children already walk to school each day. We celebrate this by having Wednesdays as a walk to school day. Children whose parents have to drive them to school can also join in by parking a distance from the school and walking the last part of the journey. This all helps to keep cars off the road and reduce pollution and congestion. |

Be the Best You Can Be
17 September 2012 |
| Talan Skeels-Piggins visited the children to tell the story of his Paralympic journey. In 2003 Talan shatterd his back and fractured his neck in a motorcycle accident. He was given a 30% chance of survival. 8 days after the accident he set himself the goal of becoming a paralympic skier in the 2010 Winter Paralympics. After 7 months Talan left hospital and started to ski on a specially adapted sit ski. He represented team GB in the 2010 games and later he became European Champion. Talan told his story and set the children the challenge of achieving their own goals, whether they be small or large, by being the best they can be. We have all learnt to try our hardest and always do our best in order to achieve our dreams. Thank you, Talan, for coming to visit and inspire us. |

02 March 2012 |
| We had a visit from the Smoothie Bike. The children learnt about the importance of eating lots of fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy diet. They also learnt about the nutritional values of different types of fruit. Bananas release energy really slowly, so they are good for people keen on sport. Minibridge Event
25 January 2012 |
Minibridge Event
Pembury School took a team of minibridge players to play at the prestigious Young Chelsea Bridge Club on Wednesday. The English Bridge Union had arranged for three primary schools to play there to promote the mathematical and social skills of the game. Journalists from leading newspapers and magazines were invited to play with the children - or be taught by them if they didn't know how to play. Two keen bridge players from the House of Lords also supported the event - Baroness Henig and Lord Skelmersdale. The children played minibridge from 10:30 til 2:30, with just a short break for lunch - a marathon mental workout! They represented Pembury School superbly, with one journalist making a point of commenting on their superb behaviour - and minibridge skills. Well done!
