Buildings Project
15 October 2012 |
Simon Riley
On Monday the 15th of October, Year 5 had a visit from Simon Riley, Oscar’s dad, in order to learn more about buildings and communities. Mr Riley has had different roles within the industry and is currently a project manager for an international company who design and build a range of buildings to fulfil their client’s needs.
Mr Riley started by sharing with Chestnut and Sycamore classes some of the most exciting projects in which he has been involved. He explained how budgets and other factors have an impact on the final designs. Lots of the buildings needed creative and unique solutions in order to work, Mr Riley emphasised the need for sustainable communities and showed year 5 the example of Melbourne, Australia, where the buildings were designed as part of a whole community rather than in isolation.
Year 5 learned that building projects also need lots of different people working together as a team. These included a project manager, architect, structural engineer, services engineer, quantity surveyor and contractor. All these people have different skills and roles to play in order for the project to be completed.
We learned a great deal about buildings from our sessions. It really opened our eyes to the complexity of the process. Mr Riley showed us that great buildings are an effective combination of art and science, form and function.
